Japanese Style: Extreme Tanning

Posted on November 9, 2006

I’m usually very impressed with how far ahead some Japanese kids are when it comes to fashion, but I’m not sure about this one. Extreme sunless tanning (borderline blackface) is a bit much. All they need now are some big old J-Lo butt implants, and they all set.

Reminds me a lot of black-face minstrelsy.

The really surprising thing is that all of those “girls” are actually men.

  3. crash courses on October 12th, 2007 12:47 pm

Is that true? Are they really blokes!?

  4. Paul on October 12th, 2007 2:14 pm

They’re trying sooo hard to look like Southern California blonde beach babes.

  5. Emi on October 12th, 2007 4:14 pm

Um yeah, see the date on those pictures? 1999. That look (“ganguro”) has been out of style for a long time now. Yes, it’s scary, but it’s old news…

These girls are “Yamamba”. This has been going on for about 15 or so years. The lighter ones do legit tanning so some of them look pretty decent but the most of the ones shown here are uncommonly dark and are using pigmented creams. Another commenter mentioned blackface and even though the trend itself is benign you are correct in that blackface is manifest. In Japan they see black people as very exotic and do not understand that things such as mammies are racist. The same goes for black face, though the real goal of this trend was just to simulate tropical clothing and tans.

WTF is all I have to ask. Ain’t that like DANGEROUS and don’t tanning like that cause skin CANCER!? I am going to laugh when all those Japanese women get Cancer. I thought they were advanced but apparently not ._. To be this stupid

But anyways. It seems like a “cool” fad, can’t imagine any girls here in Florida doing that. Meh.

  8. loltastic on October 12th, 2007 4:56 pm

They all went from pretty to ugly in 2.5 seconds…

I believe it’s called ganguro fashion.

I like Japanese street fashion, but I’m not a fan of that.

ok – i’m living in japan >>> what u need to know is that in japan the solariums have the same machines as north america and europe – except whereas in the west the time limits are normally like 8, 10, or 12 minutes – in japan – they are set at 40, 60, or 80 minutes > they also have more powerful machines that can be used for 15, 30, or 45 minutes – and additional MEGA powerful machines for only face. another difference if instead of regular tan enhancer lotions – they give you something called ‘orange’ which intentionally designed to make you orange not brown … lovely lol x — and they are v e r y v e r y cheap – for 40 minutes on one of these beds it’s only about $8

OMG! These girls are crazy, hopefully it’s just a quick fad and they all get out of it. I see American girls just like that, LOL!

I know Black is beautiful and these girls want to look as pretty as black girls; but this is to far. Not to mention just plain dangerous to your health.

  21. Louis Vuitton on March 12th, 2008 3:21 pm

This is very interesting, I never thought Japanese fashion would go this far as to trying to look like black women LOL. It looks ok on some of the girls above but not all.

  22. AFV on March 14th, 2008 3:25 pm

    Cerf is a stupid nerd

  23. Cerf on March 14th, 2008 3:42 pm

AFV drinks cum like it’s water

  24. Cerf on March 14th, 2008 3:45 pm

AFV also smuggles fat children across the mexican border by hiding them in his anal cavity which has be stretched out by the countless number of AIDS infested black homeless men he spends his waking hours with.

  25. ¬ßm?´gm?Ö on March 14th, 2008 3:47 pm

I know AFV too and he does smuggle children across the border in his ass. Sometimes the kids die and he just leaves them in his ass for weeks.

  26. AFV on March 14th, 2008 3:48 pm

i would never smuggle ‘fat’ children

I saw a documentary on those ganguro girls and most japanese people disapprove of them. They are outcasted from society so they create their own “clans” and clubs. To become a member of those clubs, you are challenged in various ways (weird tasks and stuff) most of them don’t tan, they apply a special makeup base and purposely do their hair and makeup to confirm to the style of their club. It’s rare now but used to be quite a trend.

This is not blackface, even the darkest fake tan, these girls are not trying to be racist, they are paying ‘homage’ to Hip Hop culture and American Blacks. If these girls were white, THEN it would be racist.

  32. Asian Japanese Girls on December 16th, 2008 10:56 pm

wow , isnt that alittle too extreme?

  33. Summer on January 27th, 2009 12:13 pm

Wow! I love it! It’s so cute (kawaii) and fun but it should deffo be toned down a little! lol!

This is the only working Myspace private profile viewer that will actually display a private profile. Many others have claimed they can, but they don’t have the required software to actually operate a private Myspace profile viewer.

I’m glad this trend is dying out, because you can claim homage all you want, it’s blackface, it’s exaggerated, it’s cartoonish, and it’s politically super-iffy. Sorry, but it’s way over the racist line and just ends up looking ignorant. “Yamamba?” Whoa.

  36. shikyo on December 5th, 2009 2:54 pm

I actually heard that the reason that this subculture emerged was because of the fact that Japanese culture favors paler skin when rating one’s beauty and it is quite common for most skincare products to have ingredients that bleach the skin. So like all the other Japanese street fashions that have emerged that the world loves the reason why it came into being is to challenge the conformity of Japanese society and revolt against their perceptions of beauty.

I believe this fashion appeared in the early nineties, if so that was when Japan was doing quite well economy-wise, so one can assume that might have influenced the extreme makeup-wearing as people had more money. You know, like with the eighties when everything that could be made bigger was… People/girls had the money so they used it, think extreme valley girl… But then again this is a mixture of fact & speculation… I’m not exactly saying that I approve of this fashion, but you kind of have to understand the reason behind it also…
